Mike Van Diest
Carroll College Head Football Coach
In his 13 years as head coach at Carroll College, Mike Van Diest has led the Fighting Saints to 6 National Championships and 12 consecutive Frontier Conference Championships, putting together one of the most dominating runs in college football history. His streak of 12 consecutive postseason appearances is first among active schools. During Van Diest’s tenure the Saints have posted a 157-22 record for an incredible winning percentage of 92 percent. Once they reach the postseason, the Saints have been nearly unbeatable, compiling a playoff record of 36-6 over the past 12 years. Van Diest is No. 1 among NAIA active coaches in winning percentage at nearly 89 percent. Under Van Diest’s watch the Saints have reached the NAIA National Championship game 8 times in the past 10 years, and have won it all 6 times. Van Diest is also a three-time AFCA National Coach of the Year honoree (2003, 2007 and 2010).
Van Diest, who is a Helena native and a 1970 graduate of Helena High School, went on to earn his degree from the University of Wyoming in 1975. He and his wife, Heidi, have two sons, Shane (25) and Clay (18).
